Trick or Treating, Gunfire and a Stranger in our House.

Well this has been a weekend for the books. A weekend I will remember and treasure for the rest of my life.

It started with Halloween on Friday night. The holiday began as usual, keeping to our Halloween tradition. My sister-in-law and I always take our boys out Trick or Treating together. Our boys are five months apart, Drayton being older than Matthew. Drayton is a Ninja and Matthew is Iron Man.

We all had a great time. Another fun filled Halloween has been had by our family for sure, but this was only a small part of our big weekend.

It all started at 4:30 a.m., the morning after Halloween. I woke up to a sudden jolt from my husband. Startled and un-willing to wake up, I cried, “what?” He said, “it’s time to get up.” November 1, 2014 marks opening day of youth deer season. Our son is old enough and ready. We wake Matthew up and get ready to head about an hour to our hunting spot.

We arrive at just the right time. It’s still dark enough to walk to our fort that we had built out of dozer debris, from trees that had been cleared earlier this year. There is nothing like the feeling that you get waking up early in the morning, while the moon and stars are still high in the sky, and you walk through the frost, on your way to your hunting spot. I couldn’t help but smile the entire way.

When we got to our spot, the three of us sat back and took in the chill of the morning air and the sounds of undisturbed nature, as we waited for the sun to rise. We weren’t even there an hour before we had a very nice buck walking toward us. Christian & I had been discussing if we were going to let Matthew’s first kill be a buck or not. We decided against it, and we let that buck walk on. We continued to sit and wait for a doe, until Matthew just couldn’t take the cold anymore. We got up and began walking to get warmed up. We hunted until around nine-thirty in the morning and then decided to go get something to eat.

We headed back out to our hunting spot around two-thirty in the afternoon and began the evening hunt. We waited in our spot for a very long time. Right as we were getting ready to leave though, some does came out. Matthew was so excited and ready to shoot, we had to tell him to stop giggling. He aimed his single shot .223 at one of the does and shot. He missed. We quickly re-loaded the gun, the does still standing there, and he shot again. He missed. LOL…One more time. Yes, the does were still standing there. We re-loaded again and BANG….his first deer down.

We quickly went to find the deer. When we got to the deer, we discovered that the doe that Matthew was shooting at was really a button buck. The little brat. We had decided that he would shoot a doe for his first kill, but he ended up getting a buck anyway. He was very proud.

We were all very proud. I don’t think there are any words to describe the way that Christian and I were feeling after having experienced our sons first hunt and kill together. Christian and I love hunting and we have talked about the day that Matthew would kill his first deer for years. And now it has happened, we couldn’t be more proud. We continued the evening by telling/showing the family his first kill and preparing the meat….the tradition continues.

The weekend fun wasn’t over just yet. Sunday we had a stranger in our house.

This is Miley. Christian and Matthew have been begging for a dog for a long time now and I have been completely against it the entire time. I just didn’t feel like we have the time or patience to care for a dog, but it looks like the boys of the house win again. The boys always seem to win.

Miley made it her first night away from her litter-mates  She was a little whinny through the night, but I think she did pretty good. Maybe now that we have Miley, the girls will start winning….I could hope. 😉

That’s all for now,
Kendra Lewis
