Well a new adventure has begun and I found a new passion, Christian Education. Our church is starting a school and while we may be newbies in the school starting business, we are not new to educating children and raising them up in the way of the Lord and instilling virtue in them.
Our heart is to instill a love of learning in these kids in a safe environment where they can interact with others and engage in hands on every day tasks. We want our school to be a family of like minded Christians growing and learning together with lots of love and laughs and hugs. We want to teach kids how to think for themselves, how to problem solve, how to plan, how to seek God first in all that they do and serve Him with their whole heart. We want the family, the church and the school to work hand in hand to raise these kids up and set them on the path God has for them. I’m excited and nervous, but most of all, I trust God.
I’ve been learning a lot about education this year and what I am learning both excites me and saddens me for the state of our society and school system today. Our society has been dumbed down for the past several decades or more and one thing I notice about kids today is they can’t do the things I did at their age. It would be unimaginable for a six year old today to drive a vehicle without an adult in it and without a car seat, however that was my life as I child. I did so many tasks that kids today wouldn’t be able to figure out. I wonder if my parents and their parents noticed this in my generation, if the progressive dumbing down of society has just continued.
(I’ve been reading this book, The Battle for the American Mind.)
I found the Herzog Foundation and they have been a tremendous resource to us and the teachers that are plowing the way to get this school off of the ground. I’m excited to see where all of this leads and excited for the kids and families that are going to benefit.
